Golfklúbbur Grindavíkur was founded on 14 May 1981 by local residents who initially played on a 4-hole course near the fishing town. The layout was gradually expanded — to 9 holes in the 1990s — as the club's membership grew. In 2012 the club completed a major capital project: a full 18-hole championship layout, Húsatóftavöllur, was inaugurated on 28 July. The expansion positioned Grindavík among Iceland's larger and more geologically dramatic courses, a status reinforced by the Sundhnúkur eruption sequence beginning in 2021 which brought international attention to the peninsula. The club navigated partial closures during the most active eruption phases but has operated throughout the 2026 season.

Húsatóftavöllur is an 18-hole, par 70 course on Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula, operated by Golfklúbbur Grindavíkur since the club's founding on 14 May 1981. The course straddles the geological boundary of the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates — one of the very few golf courses in the world built on an actively diverging plate margin. Five holes run along the Atlantic coastline with direct ocean exposure; thirteen wind through contiguous lava fields north of the Reykjanesvíta road. The full 18-hole Húsatóftavöllur layout was formally opened on 28 July 2012 following a major expansion, anchored by a new clubhouse extension. Before that, the club operated a 9-hole layout that had itself grown from 4 holes at the club's founding. The course is approximately 50 km from Reykjavík and 7 km from the Blue Lagoon spa, making it a natural inclusion in a Reykjanes Peninsula day trip. Important: Grindavík is in an active volcanic zone. The Sundhnukur crater row experienced a series of eruptions between 2021 and August 2025. The club was confirmed operating in the 2026 season, with golfer reviews on Golfscape from May and June 2026. No active eruption or exclusion zone covered the course as of September 2026.
