Folklore

Story & Folklore

Eiríksstaðir in the Dalir region is where Eiríkur rauði (Erik the Red) farmed and where his son Leifur Eiríksson — later known as Leif the Lucky — was born around 970 AD. Leif would later sail west and reach Vínland (North America) around the year 1000 — some 500 years before Columbus. Archaeological excavations in the 1990s uncovered the genuine remains of a Viking longhouse here, and a full-scale replica has been built on the original foundations. In summer, costumed guides demonstrate Viking-age craft, cooking and weapons from inside the longhouse. A small but deeply evocative site in a beautiful remote valley.

Did You Know?

Leif Erikson, who is believed to have been born at Eiríksstaðir, reached the shores of North America around the year 1000—nearly five centuries before Christopher Columbus crossed the Atlantic. His voyage made him one of the earliest known Europeans to set foot in the New World.
