Total Solar Eclipse At Sea

We depart from Stykkishólmur Harbor aboard Særún, a private expedition vessel. Tough and made to face challenges, we weave between the volcanic islands of Breiðafjörður Bay. The route brings us close to bird cliffs and open waters, before we continue towards Elliðaey for complete totality.

The crew lowers a net into the deep, cold waters of the bay, bringing fresh scallops, sea urchin and crabs on board — served with chilled drinks as the vessel slowly makes its way towards the main event.

We anchor in the natural crater of Elliðaey for totality.

We enter Elliðaey — a horseshoe-shaped island whose rim resembles an ancient volcanic crater. Inside the cradle, the moon takes its first bite from the sun and the landscape begins to look alien.

At totality, the birds go silent. Then the chorus returns.

The birds fall dramatically quiet when the sun is more than 99% obscured. Then sunlight breaks through, and inside the acoustic bowl of Elliðaey, the birds erupt into amplified echoes.

As darkness falls, the island vanishes. You are inside the eclipse.

When totality hits and the light drops to twilight, the crater walls of Elliðaey fade into darkness. The island itself disappears. You float in a black void with the corona blazing overhead.

We set course back to Stykkishólmur as daylight returns.

We lift anchor and return slowly towards Stykkishólmur while the partial eclipse continues to unwind above. The entire voyage lasts three and a half hours.
