Vegghellir's history is written in the very rock that forms it, dating back thousands of years to periods of intense volcanic activity in West Iceland. It is a classic example of a lava tube, a geological phenomenon common in regions like Iceland where basaltic lava flows are prevalent. The formation process began when highly fluid lava erupted and flowed across the landscape. As the surface of the lava stream cooled upon contact with the air, it solidified into a hard crust. Beneath this insulating crust, the hotter, still-molten lava continued to flow, much like a river in a tunnel. When the eruption ceased or the supply of molten lava diminished, the remaining liquid lava drained out, leaving behind a hollow, subterranean passage – the lava tube we see today. These ancient formations provide invaluable insights into Iceland's geological evolution and volcanic past.
