While Syðra Lón doesn't boast a long recorded human history of settlement directly on its shores, its significance lies primarily in its ecological role. For centuries, Icelandic communities have coexisted with and relied upon the natural resources of their environment. Lagoons like Syðra Lón, rich in birdlife, have historically been important for sustenance and traditional practices. The lagoon's most notable historical connection is undoubtedly to the eider duck. Eider down, a remarkably warm and lightweight insulation, has been a valuable commodity in Iceland for generations. Local farmers and communities have traditionally managed eider colonies, carefully harvesting the down that the ducks use to line their nests, a sustainable practice that benefits both humans and birds. This symbiotic relationship underscores the deep historical ties between Icelanders and their unique natural world. Today, Syðra Lón continues this legacy as a protected breeding ground, representing a living piece of Iceland's natural heritage.
