Folklore
Story & Folklore
Saxhóll is a 109-metre high cinder cone volcano on the Snæfellsnes peninsula, notable for being surprisingly easy to climb. A metal staircase of 179 steps runs directly up the cone's steep flank, bringing visitors to the perfectly preserved crater rim in about 10 minutes. From the top, the view over the surrounding Snæfellsnes lava fields and the sea is exceptional, with Snæfellsjökull glacier rising to the east. The crater rim is sharply defined — Saxhóll erupted roughly 3,000 years ago and shows little erosion. Because it sits on the exposed western peninsula, the wind at the summit can be formidable. A quick detour of 20 minutes from the Snæfellsnes driving circuit.
