Sauðeyjar holds significant natural importance, having been designated on the natural heritage list of the Westfjords due to its exceptional beauty and unique ecosystem. Its historical significance is primarily tied to its role as a crucial wildlife habitat. For centuries, these islands have provided sanctuary for marine mammals and seabirds, making them a cornerstone of the region's biodiversity. The islands have been recognized as vital seal pupping grounds, with scientific observations between 2005 and 2009 identifying around 140 seal pups. This highlights their long-standing role in supporting seal populations in the Westfjords. Furthermore, Sauðeyjar is a historically significant breeding site for the European shag, hosting a substantial portion of the Icelandic population, indicating a long-term ecological stability that has allowed such a significant colony to thrive.
