Laufskálavarða has long been a significant landmark for travelers traversing the Mýrdalssandur desert in South Iceland. The most enduring aspect of Laufskálavarða's history is the tradition of its stone cairns. For generations, it was customary for first-time travelers crossing Mýrdalssandur to add a stone to one of the existing cairns. This act was believed to bring good fortune and ensure a safe passage through the challenging terrain. With time, these individual acts of hope and tradition accumulated into the vast field of cairns seen today, transforming a natural lava formation into a living monument to human perseverance and belief.
