A place of worship has existed at Húsafell since time immemorial, with historical records indicating a church dedicated to God, the Virgin Mary, and Saint Cecilia during Iceland's Catholic era. This ancient lineage firmly establishes Húsafellskapella as a site of profound religious significance, a continuous beacon of faith through centuries of Icelandic history and societal change. The legends of miracles occurring here, particularly through vows made to Saint Cecilia, underscore its deeply spiritual reputation. The current chapel, a distinctive and beloved landmark, broke ground in the mid-20th century and was consecrated in 1973. Its design is a unique collaboration: the renowned Icelandic painter Ásgrímur Jónsson provided the artistic vision, while architect Halldór H. Jónsson translated this into a functional structure. Kristinn Kristjánsson served as the master builder, bringing the vision to fruition. This fusion of artistic talent and skilled craftsmanship resulted in the charming white chapel with its iconic green roof that stands proudly today, capable of seating 60-70 worshippers, continuing the long tradition of spiritual gathering in Húsafell.
