Herjólfsdalur combines settlement history, archaeology and modern Westman Islands culture in one dramatic natural amphitheatre. Remains of an early farm and old booths are protected here, while a reconstructed turf house helps visitors imagine life during the settlement period. Since 1874 the valley has also been closely associated with Þjóðhátíð, the islands' famous summer festival.
