Hellisey's history is deeply intertwined with the traditional livelihoods of the Vestmannaeyjar islanders. For generations, this remote volcanic outpost has served as a crucial resource for sustenance. The island's rich seabird populations, including puffins and gannets, have historically been hunted, and their eggs collected, providing vital food sources for the local community. A testament to this enduring human connection is the fishing hut of the Hellisey people, a small structure nestled on the island's northern slopes. Originally built to support hunting and fishing expeditions, the hut was notably rebuilt in 1968, signifying the ongoing importance of Hellisey to the islanders. Even today, these traditional practices, alongside the grazing of sheep, continue, linking modern life to ancient customs. Beyond its human history, Hellisey holds significant natural heritage. Its formation as a volcanic island shaped its dramatic landscape of towering cliffs and green plateaus. Recognised for its ecological value, particularly its dense seabird colonies, Hellisey is now designated as a protected area under Iceland's nature conservation plan, ensuring its wild beauty and unique ecosystem are preserved for future generations.
