Eldheimar preserves the story of the Eldfell eruption that began on Heimaey on 23 January 1973. Most residents were evacuated by fishing vessels during the first night, while lava and ash later buried or destroyed hundreds of buildings. The museum was developed around an excavated home left beneath the eruption deposits, turning the disaster and the islanders' return into a tangible historical experience.
