History & Background

Iceland was first settled by Norse Vikings around 870 AD, bringing with them traditions of governance that included local and national assemblies, known as 'þing'. Árnesþingstaður is one such historically significant Viking-age site, believed to have served as a regional assembly point in South Iceland. The site features approximately 30 turf-hut foundations, or 'þingbúðatóftir', which were temporary shelters erected by attendees during the assembly sessions. These structures are notably arranged around two natural depressions in the landscape, a layout consistent with known Viking-age assembly grounds. The extensive nature of the ruins at Árnesþingstaður suggests a vital role in the region's early governance and community life. The Icelandic sagas, while not directly detailing Árnesþingstaður specifically, provide context for the lives and exploits of these early settlers and the importance of such assemblies in maintaining law and order.
