Víðgelmir was formed about 1,100 years ago by a lava flow from the Hallmundarhraun lava field. The cave was historically used as a shelter, and archaeological evidence suggests it was inhabited at times. In 1993, the cave was opened for guided tours with lighting and walkways installed to preserve the delicate formations.
