About Silfra
🐉 Legends of Silfra
Silfra has been part of Icelandic folklore for generations. Local tales speak of hidden people (huldufólk) and other supernatural beings who inhabit the area. According to tradition, this place deserves respect and visitors should be mindful of the ancient spirits who call it home.
📖 History
The fissure was created by the separation of the two tectonic plates, which drift apart by approximately 2 cm per year. The water in Silfra is glacial meltwater from Langjökull glacier that has been filtered through underground lava rock for 30–100 years, giving it extraordinary clarity with visibility up to 100 meters. Water temperature stays around 2°C year-round.
