History & Background

The history of Blönduóskirkja eldri begins in 1894, when this charming wooden church was consecrated, becoming the spiritual cornerstone for the burgeoning community of Blönduós. Before its construction, residents likely attended services in smaller, perhaps less formal, structures or traveled further afield. Its design is typical of Icelandic parish churches of the late 19th century: a modest, timber-framed building reflecting both the available resources and the prevailing architectural styles of the era. For nearly eight decades, Blönduóskirkja eldri served as the primary place of worship, witnessing countless baptisms, weddings, and funerals that marked the passage of generations in the fjord. It was a focal point for community life, a place of solace and celebration. However, as the town grew and architectural tastes evolved, plans for a new, larger, and more modern church began to take shape. In 1971, the iconic new Blönduóskirkja, with its distinctive volcano-inspired design, was consecrated, taking over the main religious duties.
