History & Background
Jón Gunnar Árnason designed the Sun Voyager as a tribute to both the sun and the spirit of discovery. The artwork was chosen from among proposals for a sculpture to celebrate Reykjavík's bicentennial. Sadly, the artist passed away in 1989 before the sculpture was completed and installed in 1990.
