„Í Vatnsdælasögu segir frá því að Ingimundur gamli fann birnu og tvo húna á vatninu og nefndi það því Húnavatn. Síðar fór hann með bjarndýrin til Noregs og gaf þau Haraldi konungi hárfagra en þáði af honum skipið Stíganda. Hann „kom báðum skipunum í Húnavatnsós og gaf þar öll örnefni, er síðan hafa haldist. Þar heitir Stígandahróf, er hann var upp settur.“ Stígandahróf þekkja menn enn og sér þar fyrir tóttum í Búðatanga, í beinni stefnu milli Þingeyrakirkju og bæjarins á Akri.“
