The National Museum of Iceland was founded in 1863 to preserve Iceland’s cultural heritage. Before its establishment, many important Icelandic artifacts were kept in Danish collections. During its early years, the museum’s collection was housed in several buildings across Reykjavík before moving to its current location on Suðurgata in 1950. Since then, it has grown into the country’s central institution for preserving and researching national heritage and cultural history. Today, the museum continues to collect, study, and present artifacts from all periods of Icelandic history, ensuring future generations can explore the story of the nation.
