Hvanneyri holds deep roots in Icelandic history, identified as a land settlement farm. According to the sagas, it was first claimed by Skalla-Grímur, who resided in Borg, while Grímur hinn háleyski established his home here. This ancient heritage ties Hvanneyri directly to Iceland's rich tradition of folklore and sagas, making it a place of enduring cultural significance. A pivotal moment in Hvanneyri's development occurred in 1890 with the establishment of the South District's Agricultural School. This institution marked a significant step in Icelandic education, being the fourth agricultural school founded in the country. Over the years, it has grown and evolved, eventually becoming the Agricultural University of Iceland, which continues to be a vibrant center for learning and research today. The architectural landscape of Hvanneyri also tells a compelling story. The main school building, constructed in 1910, was designed by the esteemed master architect Rögnvaldur Ólafsson. This structure, along with other nearby buildings, forms 'Gamli staðurinn' (The Old Place), a unique architectural ensemble. It is celebrated as a collection of works by Iceland's pioneering architects, including Rögnvaldur Ólafsson, Einar Erlendsson, and Guðjón Samúelsson, showcasing early Icelandic design and craftsmanship. Additionally, the area's natural environment received protection, with the Andakíll nature reserve established in 2002 and expanded in 2011, safeguarding its ecological value.
