Hengifoss Waterfall
About Hengifoss Waterfall
Hengifoss is the third tallest waterfall in Iceland at 128 meters, set within dramatic cliff faces that reveal striking red and black horizontal geological layers representing millions of years of volcanic history.
History & Background
The red and black layers in the cliffs flanking Hengifoss tell a detailed geological story — the red layers are ancient soil horizons that formed between lava flows during warm interglacial periods, while the black layers are solidified basalt from successive volcanic eruptions. This sequence stretches back over two million years. The hike to Hengifoss also passes Litlanesfoss — a smaller waterfall framed by perfectly symmetrical vertical basalt columns, sometimes called 'the organ pipes'.
