The construction of Gilsfjarðarbrú was a pivotal moment for infrastructure in the Westfjords. Before its completion, travelers faced a lengthy detour around the entire Gilsfjörður, or relied on ferry crossings, making access to the isolated Westfjords challenging and time-consuming. The causeway, largely an embankment filled with earth and rock, dramatically reduced travel times and significantly improved connectivity to the region. Completed in the late 20th century, the Gilsfjarðarbrú project represented a significant investment in linking Iceland's regions. While primarily built for transportation efficiency, its design, particularly the short bridge section, inadvertently created a unique hydrological system. This altered water flow quickly transformed the area into a distinct ecosystem, attracting a rich diversity of birdlife and adding an ecological dimension to its engineering significance. The bridge thus stands as a testament to both human ingenuity and the unexpected ways nature adapts to and thrives alongside human intervention.

Gilsfjarðarbrú, situated in the breathtaking Westfjords region, is a remarkable feat of engineering and a natural wonder rolled into one. Shags nest on skerries within the inner fjord, while various shorebirds frequent the western side. Late summer brings elegant swans, adding to the spectacle. While the birdlife is abundant and fascinating, visitors should note that dedicated accessibility and safety features for birdwatching are currently limited, requiring caution. The views from the causeway itself are spectacular, offering panoramic vistas of the fjord, surrounding mountains, and the expansive sky, making it a memorable stop for any traveler traversing Iceland's dramatic coastal landscape.
