About Eiríksstaðir
The reconstructed longhouse birthplace of Leif Eriksson, the Norse explorer who reached North America 500 years before Columbus.
Folklore
Story & Folklore
Eiríksstaðir in the Dalir region is where Eiríkur rauði (Erik the Red) farmed and where his son Leifur Eiríksson — later known as Leif the Lucky — was born around 970 AD. Leif would later sail west and reach Vínland (North America) around the year 1000 — some 500 years before Columbus. Archaeological excavations in the 1990s uncovered the genuine remains of a Viking longhouse here, and a full-scale replica has been built on the original foundations. In summer, costumed guides demonstrate Viking-age craft, cooking and weapons from inside the longhouse. A small but deeply evocative site in a beautiful remote valley.
