Almannagjá is a major fault within the Þingvellir rift system, where extension associated with the Mid-Atlantic Ridge has fractured and lowered the landscape over time. The gorge also served as an approach to the Alþingi assembly grounds, linking it directly with the political history of Þingvellir.

Almannagjá is one of the clearest surface expressions of the active rift zone at Þingvellir. The gorge forms part of the western boundary fault system of the subsiding rift valley rather than a simple line separating two tectonic plates. A marked walking route follows the gorge toward the historic Alþingi assembly area, combining geology and cultural history in the same landscape.
