A mountain-and-fjord road trip from Akureyri through Dalvík to historic Siglufjörður.

Tröllaskagi is one of North Iceland’s most satisfying short road trips: steep mountains rise straight from Eyjafjörður while tunnels connect fishing communities that once felt far more isolated. Akureyri to Siglufjörður is about 75 km each way, so the simplest version is an easy full day; continuing west toward Sauðárkrókur turns it into a better 1–2 day touring route.

The main route is not an F-road, but winter weather can make exposed coastal sections and approaches difficult. Check roads and weather and shorten the day when conditions deteriorate.

May–October gives the easiest combination of daylight and road conditions. The main tunnel route is year-round, but winter wind, snow and ice can still make the drive slower and less suitable for sightseeing stops.

道路状況

The standard Akureyri–Dalvík–Siglufjörður route uses normal roads and tunnels and does not require a 4x4 in good conditions. Winter snow and ice can still be challenging.

天気

Mountain weather and coastal wind can change quickly; conditions in Akureyri do not always match Siglufjörður.

給油

Akureyri, Dalvík, Siglufjörður and Sauðárkrókur are practical service points. Refuel before continuing onto longer rural extensions.

食事

The towns have cafés and restaurants, but seasonal hours vary. Siglufjörður is worth planning as a meal stop rather than only a photo stop.

Use town and harbour parking plus signed viewpoints. Do not stop inside tunnels or on narrow roadside shoulders.

Use facilities in the towns and museums; roadside viewpoints have limited services.

Never stop in tunnels, use headlights as required, allow extra following distance and use signed pull-offs for photos.
