Hjörleifshöfði – The First Viking Murder

Hjörleifshöfði – The First Viking Murder

The Story

Stand at the foot of Hjörleifshöfði, a dramatic promontory steeped in one of Iceland's earliest and most tragic tales. This is the site where, according to the Landnámabók (Book of Settlements), Hjörleifur, brother of Ingólfur Arnarson (Iceland's first permanent settler), met a brutal end.

Hjörleifur, who had come to Iceland with his brother, tragically fell victim to his own Irish thralls. Driven by mistreatment, the thralls turned on him, marking this spot as the scene of the first recorded Viking murder in Iceland. The stark, imposing presence of Hjörleifshöfði serves as a somber reminder of the harsh realities and conflicts that accompanied the settlement of this new land.
