Draugarlág

It is said that two shepherds in the area became embroiled in a bitter dispute. One of them was from Syðrigarðar, while the other was from Kaldárbakki in the district of Kolbeinsstaðahrepp. In the end, matters escalated to the point that they killed one another. The place where they fell is still known today as Draugalág ("Ghost Hollow"), because the area became heavily haunted after their deaths. Draugalág is located on Garðaholt, and the two men are buried there in separate cairn graves a short distance apart from each other.

📖 The Story

On the windswept expanse of Garðaholt, where the land meets the tumultuous sea, a chilling tale is whispered through the ages – the legend of Draugarlág. It tells of two shepherds, their lives intertwined by the harsh demands of the land, yet separated by a chasm of rivalry. One hailed from the sturdy farms of Syðrigarðar, the other from the remote Kaldárbakki in Kolbeinsstaðahrepp. Their initial disagreements over grazing rights or boundaries festered, growing into a bitter, consuming hatred that overshadowed their daily tasks and poisoned the very air around them.

The animosity between the two men reached its grim zenith on the very ground that now bears their cursed legacy. Fueled by pride and an unyielding desire for dominance, their dispute erupted into a violent confrontation. What began as heated words soon escalated into a desperate, fatal struggle. In a tragic climax, under the indifferent gaze of the Icelandic sky, both shepherds fell, each succumbing to the hand of the other, their lives extinguished in a senseless act of mutual destruction.

From that day forward, the hollow where they met their end became known as Draugarlág, or "Ghost Hollow," for the area was irrevocably tainted by their violent passing. The spirits of the two ill-fated shepherds are said to linger, their restless presence casting a pall over the land. They lie buried still on Garðaholt, each in his own cairn grave, separated even in death, a stark and enduring monument to a rivalry that transcended life itself.
