„Staupasteinn er talsvert stór staupmyndaður steinn undir miðju Hvammsfjalli við sunnanverðan Hvalfjörð. Steininn stendur utan í dálitlum hól og þjóðvegurinn lá lengst af í skarðinu milli hólsins og fjallsins“ en hefur nú verið færður. Áður fyrr var steinninn vinsæll áningastaður vegfarenda sem áttu leið hjá enda hafði ferðin tekið nokkra klukkutíma þegar komið var að honum frá Reykjavík. „Steinninn og nánasta umhverfi hans er friðlýst og hafin er ræktun trjáplantna í hólnum umhverfis hann.“
