Research at Stóra-Mörk has provided unusually detailed evidence of how early farming transformed the South Iceland environment. Before settlement the area supported damp birch and willow woodland; after the 10th century, grazing and cultivation were followed by woodland loss and increased soil instability. The farm remains in active agricultural use today.
