Kjalarnes has been inhabited since the early settlement period of Iceland and is mentioned in historical sources and sagas. Over time, it developed as a farming area supporting nearby communities. Despite its inclusion within Reykjavík, it has preserved much of its rural identity and historical character, remaining an important link between Iceland’s past and present.
Kjalarnes is Reykjavík municipality’s northern rural district, with farms, coastline and open views toward Mount Esja and Faxaflói. The area has a long settlement history and appears in early Icelandic written traditions. Today it forms the transition between the urban capital and the countryside north and west of Reykjavík.
