Jökulsárgil tilheyrir Giljagriðlandi, líkt og fram kemur í Náttúrumæraskrá Fljótsdalshéraðs. Til griðlandsins tilheyrir „gil Jökulsár á Dal frá gömlu brúnni og inn að Teigaseli I, einnig Giljahóla, Hauksstaðahóla, Garðárgil og Sandárgil.“ Þar að er finna „fjölbreytt giljaland, skógi vaxið að hluta til, og afar sérstaka melhólar. Meginhluti þessa svæðis var tekinn á náttúruminjaskrá 1996.“

Jökulsárgil is the canyon landscape cut by Jökulsá á Dal through Jökuldalur. The wider protected landscape includes varied gorge terrain, partially wooded slopes and distinctive gravel hills. The section below and around Hauksstaðir is part of the same continuous canyon system, with pools, rapids, rock constrictions and cliff formations, so it is best treated as a sub-location rather than a separate attraction.
