Hvalfjörður (fiordo de ballenas) es un fiordo de 30 km de largo justo al norte de Reykjavík, llamado así por la gran cantidad de ballenas que alguna vez se encontraron aquí. Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial fue una importante base naval aliada y punto de parada de convoyes. El recorrido panorámico alrededor del fiordo (carretera 47) dura aproximadamente 1,5 horas y pasa por el espectacular comienzo del sendero de la cascada de Glymur, un casco de un petrolero de la Segunda Guerra Mundial en la orilla, una antigua estación ballenera y la tranquila iglesia de Saurbær. El túnel submarino bajo el fiordo (inaugurado en 1998) pasa por alto el camino panorámico.
