Hrútagjárdyngja

Hrútagjárdyngja is a large lava shield estimated by Visit Reykjanes to be about 6,000–6,500 years old. Its lava covers roughly 80–100 square kilometres and totals more than three cubic kilometres. The shield has a broad summit crater and is cut by deep fissures. Several lava caves occur within the flow field. The terrain is rough and undeveloped, so visitors should use established access routes and appropriate hiking equipment.
