Bjarni Þorsteinsson served as a parish priest in Siglufjörður in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and became one of Iceland’s most important collectors of traditional folk music. His research resulted in extensive collections of melodies and songs that remain central to the study of Icelandic musical heritage. The memorial in Siglufjörður recognizes his lasting contribution to preserving national culture during a period when modernization threatened many oral traditions across the country.
