Keflavík is a coastal town on the northwestern side of the Reykjanes Peninsula and is now part of the municipality of Reykjanesbær. Fishing and maritime trade shaped the settlement for generations, while the development of Keflavík Airport added an international dimension to the town's modern history. For visitors, Keflavík works both as a gateway to Iceland and as a destination in its own right. The waterfront, Duus cultural area and local museums provide an introduction to the history and culture of Suðurnes, while the Museum of Icelandic Rock 'n' Roll reflects the area's unusually strong connection to Icelandic popular music. Keflavík International Airport is nearby but is outside the town centre itself.
