Westfjords

Iceland's remote and rugged northwest

600 km
3–5 days
Moderate
June–August
4.7 rating

The Westfjords is Iceland's least-visited region — a dramatic peninsula of deep fjords, towering bird cliffs and near-empty roads. Dynjandi waterfall, Látrabjarg (Europe's largest bird cliff), and Ísafjörður town are the main highlights. The roads are gravel and slow, but the solitude is extraordinary.

Common Questions

FAQ

Do I need a 4WD for the Westfjords?+

Not strictly, but strongly recommended. The gravel roads can be rough, especially after rain. Many car rental companies void insurance on unpaved roads with 2WD.
