Can You Visit Iceland Without a Car?

Yes — but with limitations. Here's what's genuinely possible and what requires a car.

Reykjavík city sightseeing

Fully possible by Strætó bus + walking. Most attractions are walkable from downtown.

Golden Circle (Þingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss)

Day tours depart daily from BSÍ — no car needed. Multiple operators from ~9,000 ISK.

South Coast (Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, Vík)

Sterna runs a hop-on/hop-off coach daily in summer. Can base yourself in Vík.

Akureyri & North Iceland

Direct coach from BSÍ (6–7 hours) or 45-min flight. Local buses in Akureyri.

Vestmannaeyjar

Herjólfur ferry (35 min) or Eagle Air flight. Easily done in a day trip.

Ring Road (full circuit)

Possible in summer via Strætó route 57 + Sterna coaches, but takes 2–3 weeks and some areas have infrequent service.

Westfjords

Sæfari ferry gets you there, but within the Westfjords public transport is very limited — car hire locally recommended.

Highlands (Landmannalaugar, Þórsmörk, Askja)

No car needed to reach by bus, BUT you cannot explore independently without a 4WD. Highland buses run fixed routes only.

Doable by public transport · ️ Possible but limited · Requires car or private tour

️ Common Transport Mistakes in Iceland

These come up repeatedly from travellers every summer.

01

Arriving at Keflavík Without Organising Transfer

There is no direct connection between Keflavík Airport and central Reykjavík outside of Flybus/Airport Direct. Taxis cost 15,000–23,000 ISK. Book your transfer before you land.

02

Renting a Regular Car for F-Roads

F-roads require a high-clearance 4WD with low range. Driving a standard car on F-roads voids your rental agreement, invalidates insurance and can end in an expensive rescue.

03

Not Downloading the Strætó App

Reykjavík buses don't accept cash. You must pay via the Strætó app or use a pre-loaded travel card. Download it before you arrive.

04

Underestimating Driving Times

Iceland roads are mostly single-lane or gravel. 300 km can take 5+ hours. The Ring Road (Route 1) is 1,332 km — plan for at least 10 driving days to do it properly.

05

Not Checking Road Conditions Before Driving

Roads can close with no warning due to weather or flooding. Check road.is before every journey — especially in autumn, winter and spring.
