Viðey se instaló c. 900. Monasterio agustino fundado en 1225 (disuelto durante la Reforma de 1539). Viðeyjarstofa se construyó en 1755 como residencia de comerciantes y sheriffs: el primer edificio de piedra de Islandia. Isla cultivada hasta la década de 1940 y luego abandonada. Imagine Peace Tower se inauguró en 2007 en lo que habría sido el 67 cumpleaños de John Lennon. Isla ahora reserva natural protegida.

No — it illuminates only October 9 (John Lennon's birthday) through December 8 (anniversary of his death). Winter nights only.
