La iglesia lleva el nombre del poeta y pastor del siglo XVII Hallgrímur Pétursson. Se construyó por etapas entre 1945 y 1986 y continúa funcionando como iglesia parroquial activa, además de ser uno de los principales lugares de interés de Reykjavík.

Hallgrímskirkja es uno de los monumentos más reconocibles de Reykjavík y la iglesia más grande de Islandia. Su fachada escalonada de hormigón fue diseñada por Guðjón Samúelsson e inspirada en las formaciones de basalto y los paisajes volcánicos islandeses. La construcción comenzó en 1945 y terminó en 1986.
