The history of Víkurfjara is etched into its very sands, a geological narrative spanning millennia. The beach's distinctive black sand is a direct result of Iceland's intense volcanic activity. It is primarily composed of basalt, a dark, fine-grained volcanic rock. This basalt sand originates from ancient lava flows that erupted and then rapidly cooled upon encountering the frigid waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The sudden temperature change caused the molten rock to shatter and fragment into countless tiny, dark pebbles and grains, which have since been shaped and deposited by the ocean's powerful currents. Víkurfjara, along with other black sand beaches in Iceland, stands as a natural wonder, constantly reshaped by the interplay of volcanic forces and the relentless power of the sea.

Víkurfjara runs along the coast beside Vík í Mýrdal. From the beach there are clear views toward the Reynisdrangar sea stacks and the cliffs of Reynisfjall. Although it is distinct from Reynisfjara on the other side of the mountain, it is still an exposed North Atlantic beach with potentially strong surf. Visitors should stay well back from the water during rough conditions and follow local warning signs.
