Svarfaðardalur opens inland from Dalvík and is one of Eyjafjörður's most attractive green valleys. High mountains frame farmland, rivers and wetland habitats, giving the area a noticeably different character from the more volcanic landscapes farther east in North Iceland. The lower valley contains the Svarfaðardalur Nature Reserve, an approximately eight-square-kilometre protected wetland and the first wetland area in Iceland to receive formal protection. Around 30–40 bird species breed within the reserve, including waterfowl, waders and passerines. Marked paths, information signs and bird hides make the area particularly accessible to birdwatchers. Beyond the wetlands, Svarfaðardalur supports a network of walking and mountain routes. Visitors can begin near Dalvík or at Húsabakki and follow trails beside Svarfaðardalsá, with longer options leading deeper into the valley and surrounding mountains. The combination of easy lowland walks and more demanding hikes makes the valley suitable for both casual visitors and experienced walkers.
