History & Background
Krosshöfði by Stapavík was once a licensed trading place and remained in use into the 20th century. Remains from that period are still visible, adding a historical layer to a hike that is otherwise defined by the exposed coastal landscape.
Stapavík is a distinctive cove inside Ósflug near Unaós in East Iceland, reached on a marked coastal hiking route. Steep cliffs surround the bay, while stacks, skerries and rock shelves shape the shoreline. Stapavíkurlækur drops over a rock ledge in a small waterfall before reaching the cove.\n\nThe area also has a trading history. Krosshöfði was once a licensed trading place, and remains from that period can still be seen in the area. Innri-Stapavík is not a separate visitor destination; it is part of the same Stapavík landscape and has therefore been consolidated into this canonical hiking attraction. The walk to Stapavík combines coastal scenery with traces of East Iceland’s trading history. The enclosed cove once formed part of a working coastal landscape, while today visitors reach it on foot for the cliffs, shoreline formations, waterfall and sense of isolation.
