„Snjóhellir er 150 - 200 metrum neðan við þjóðveginn, suðvestan Purkhóla, og gengur inn og niður úr miklu niðurfalli. Hellirinn er um 282 metrar að lengd og lofthæðin er víða hátt í tíu metrar. Hann liggur djúpt í hrauninu eða á um 15 metra dýpi. Hellirinn hefur einnig verið nefndur Íshellir og virðist sem nöfnin hafi verið notuð sitt á hvað af heimamönnum. (...) Hellirinn hefur hlotið þessi kuldalegu nöfn sökum þess að að mikill ís var í honum allt árið um kring. Snjóhellir var lengi notaður frá nálægum bæjum til geymslu matvæla, líkt og frystikistur nútímans.“
