Skjólfjörur is a scenic coastal area on the eastern side of Vopnafjörður. The shoreline is known for attractive stones and wide views over the open Atlantic. The area's most distinctive feature is Ljósastapi, a sea stack standing just offshore whose shape strongly resembles an elephant when viewed from the coast. A walking route leads toward the rock and an information sign marks the start of the route. On clear days the exposed coastal viewpoint also offers a chance of seeing whales blowing offshore. Ljósastapi is best treated as the signature feature of Skjólfjörur rather than as a separate top-level attraction.
