About Skálholt

Historic bishopric and cultural centre that shaped Icelandic religious and educational life for centuries.

Explore one of the most important historic centres in Iceland and a key site in the country's Christian and Reformation history.

Background

History & Background

Skálholt became one of Iceland's two episcopal seats in the 11th century and remained a major centre of church administration, education and scholarship for centuries. Schools, manuscript culture and later printing gave the site influence far beyond the surrounding district. The Reformation reached a dramatic turning point here in 1550 when Bishop Jón Arason of Hólar and his sons were executed at Skálholt.

A church was established at Skálholt soon after Iceland's conversion to Christianity, and the site became one of the country's two bishoprics. Schools, manuscripts, printing and church administration made Skálholt a centre of learning and power. In 1550 Jón Arason, the Catholic bishop of Hólar, and his sons were executed at Skálholt during the Reformation. Today's complex includes the cathedral, archaeological remains, the crypt, Skálholtsskóli and cultural activities, continuing the site's long religious and educational role.
