History & Background
Skagafjörður has played an important role in Icelandic history since the settlement period. Hólar became one of the country's major episcopal and educational centres, while farms and assembly sites across the region preserve connections to medieval political and cultural life. The long tradition of horse breeding and horsemanship remains one of the strongest living links between the region's past and present.
Skagafjörður is one of North Iceland's richest cultural landscapes, stretching around a broad fjord framed by mountains, farmland and river valleys. The region is especially associated with the Icelandic horse: breeding, training and riding remain central to local culture, and visitors can find horse farms and guided rides around Varmahlíð, Sauðárkrókur and the surrounding countryside. History is equally important. Hólar in Hjaltadalur was a major religious and educational centre for centuries, while Glaumbær preserves the turf-farm architecture of rural Iceland. Historic sites, museums and saga connections are scattered throughout the district. Along the coast, Hofsós looks across the fjord toward the islands, and Drangey rises dramatically offshore. Skagafjörður is also an outdoor destination. The glacial rivers Austari-Jökulsá and Vestari-Jökulsá support rafting, while hiking, birdwatching and geothermal swimming add quieter options. Because the attractions are spread across a large area, the region works best as a full-day or multi-day destination rather than a single roadside stop.
