History & Background
Lómagnúpur has long been one of the dominant landmarks on the route across the sands of southeast Iceland. Its sheer cliff rises abruptly above the Skeiðarársandur area and appears in Icelandic literary and folklore traditions, including the account in Njáls saga of the giant-like guardian seen in a dream by Flosi Þórðarson.
Lómagnúpur rises almost directly from the flat Skeiðarársandur outwash plain, creating one of the South Coast's most distinctive mountain profiles. The enormous cliff is clearly visible from Route 1. Travellers should use established roadside stopping areas rather than pulling over unsafely on the Ring Road.
