The Lava Show — Real Volcanic Lava in Reykjavík
About The Lava Show — Real Volcanic Lava in Reykjavík
The Lava Show at the Old Harbour is the world's only indoor lava show, where real volcanic lava — heated to over 1,100°C — is poured before a live audience. Visitors sit within metres of glowing molten rock, feeling the intense heat and watching lava flow, crack and solidify in real time. The 30-minute show combines geology education with the visceral experience of witnessing one of nature's most powerful forces up close.
History & Background
The Lava Show was founded in 2018 as a permanent attraction in Reykjavík, building on earlier experimental shows developed by its founders after the 2010 eruptions. It was the first attraction of its kind in the world and has inspired similar concepts globally. The founders continue to operate the Reykjavík original as the flagship.

Why Visit
The Lava Show at the Old Harbour is the world's only indoor lava show, where real volcanic lava — heated to over 1,100°C — is poured before a live audience.
Did You Know?
During Iceland's most recent eruption cycles (2021–2024 in Reykjanes), molten lava reached temperatures of 1,150°C — comparable to the surface temperature of some stars.
Touching the Planet's Blood
Iceland is one of the few places on Earth where the planet's internal heat breaks through the surface regularly. The Lava Show lets you sit with it, feel it, and understand — for the first time — what a volcanic country really is.
Hidden Gems Nearby
The First Pour Moment
When the lava first hits the cold floor and the room fills with heat and light, there is always an involuntary intake of breath from the entire audience. No amount of preparation makes that moment expected.
The Souvenir Rock
The piece of solidified lava given to each visitor at the end is from the show itself — still warm when you receive it. It's a more meaningful souvenir than a stuffed puffin.
