According to Icelandic folklore, the Lagarfljótsormurinn — a giant serpent-like creature — was first sighted in 1345 and has been reported in the lake ever since. The most famous sighting was a 2012 video apparently showing a large creature undulating under the surface, which went viral and was officially declared genuine by a national commission (though scientists remain sceptical). The lake itself is 53 km long, 10 km wide and 112 metres deep. It is fed by meltwater from Vatnajökull and its unusual grey-green colour comes from glacial silt. The surrounding birch forest, Hallormsstaðaskógur, is Iceland's largest.
