About Hverastrýtur
„Tilvist neðansjávarhverastrýta í Eyjafirði var fyrst staðfest árið 1990 á dýptarmælum á rannsóknarskipinu Bjarna Sæmundssyni. Þetta var einnig í fyrsta skiptið í heiminum sem staðfest var að neðansjávarhverastrýtur væri að finna á grunnslóð“. Strýturnar eru norðvestur af Ystuvík og var því gefið nafnið Ystuvíkurstrýtur (1). Strýturnar eru fyrstu náttúruminjar á hafsbotni sem hljóta friðlýsingu á Íslandi en það var gert árið 2001. „Hverastrýturnar eru staðsettar á u.þ.b. 65 m dýpi og nær önnur upp á u.þ.b. 33 m og hin upp á u.þ.b. 15 m dýpi“ (2).
